Planetary nebulae are not related to planets in anyway.   When they were first observed, they looked like a planet disk.  They are the end of the life for some stars that are about the same size as our own sun.   The outer shell of the star is pushed away when the hydrogen is gone and the helium fuses to carbon.   What is left is the core of the star called a white dwarf which is the same size as earth is today.  Planetary nebula are short lived a few tens of thousands of years.
